Jess Cammack: Part I Architectural Assistant
Jess graduated from Lancaster University in July 2024. She has a passion for sustainable design and the retrofit of existing buildings. Her graduate portfolio centred around the adaptation of a free form timber structure designed by Blumer Lehmann, incorporated into a proposed campus building in the Lake District. Jess’ work in this portfolio has since been spotlighted in Dezeen, as well as being awarded a professional practice prize and a nomination for a material matters award. Upon leaving university. Jess participated in a competition to reimagine the mentoring space for the farm-based mental health charity ‘Growing Well’ based at Tebay’s north-bound services. Jess’ design has been shortlisted for this competition. With a background in psychology via a previous degree, Jess has a person-centre approach to architecture and is keen to work closely with clients to understand their vision.
Other Interests
In her spare time Jess enjoys walking the fells. So far, she has completed over half of the Wainwrights. Over the past year Jess has taken an active role in retrofitting her own home to improve its energy efficiency, as well as updating its appearance. When she is not busy with her house, Jess also likes to spend time with family and friends.
Favourite Building
Jess’ favourite building is Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Similarly to her own final project, Jess enjoyed the way the primary structure of the building played such a large role in its beauty. An example of retrofit Jess has always admired in the local area is Graham Norman’s work revitalising The Blencowe Hall. Where the building had sustained damage to its east wall, a sleek glazed wall fills the opening, creating an interesting juxtaposition between the new and old structure.
