The Flax Works

react engineering
Cleator Moor

The project involved the conversion of the remaining Victorian Flax Works mill building, formerly occupied by clothing manufacturer Kangol, into new office accommodation for local engineering company React Engineering, who had outgrown their previous premises in Cleator Moor. The key challenge was to meet the client’s operational requirements while working sensitively within the constraints of a historic mill building recognised as a valued heritage asset by the local community. Our approach focused on delivering a sympathetic conversion that retained the building’s historic character and architectural features, while creating high-quality, flexible workspace capable of supporting the occupier’s current and future needs. The result is a new headquarters for React Engineering that not only fulfils the client brief but also secures the long-term future of this important Victorian industrial building, preserving its contribution to the character and heritage of the wider area.
